Phonics is a crucial part of Year 1 learning, in Summer 1 we invited our families to join us for some phonics fun with interactive games!

Spring 1

This half term we have been reading Poetry by Shirley Hughes. It has been all about being Out and About in our environments and experiencing the elements. We have been on local walks to search for water, we have experienced a snow fall and fire. We have written our own poems about these elements in the style of one from the book.

Autumn 2

In Literacy we have started a new Power of reading text- called ‘Beegu’ written by Alexis Deacon. We are busy exploring the character of Beegu and what had happened to her. Coincidentally, at the start of term we received a letter from schools neighbour to say that there had been strange noises heard over the half term and asking if we could investigate. We were amazed by what we found! It was a UFO!

We had lots of our families join us for the ‘Beegu’ reading Cafe on 18th November. There was making Rocket fruit kebabs, a dark den, painting Beegu’s home planet, Making a spaceship and designing our own aliens. We also enjoyed sharing lots of space stories with our grown ups!

For Children in Need we had lots of fun and brought in a donation for our Spotty Non-uniform and cakes!

In History we have been learning about the Gunpowder plot. We were really lucky to have a visit from Lady Amelia ( Janet Marshall from Journeys for Learning) who took us back in time. She helped us to bring to life the events leading up to and following Guy Fawkes plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Autumn 1

In Literacy we have been looking at a number of Traditional tales. Our Power of Reading text is the book Rapunzel by Bethan Woolvin. We have enjoyed lots of drama and even had a Rapunzel workshop.

In Maths we have begun to look at how to read and write number sentences for addition and subtraction. We have been using our ninja moves to remember the symbols and manipulatives to explore part whole models.

Year 1 ‘s Science learning has been learning about plants and how they grow, we have been growing our own plants from seed. We have also been learning to identify deciduous and evergreen trees.

We have been identifying human and physical features in Geography, taking a trip to our local Church to find these. In Art the children have enjoyed recreating Artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s artwork using fruit and vegetables.
