Writing cafe

Year 2 children really enjoyed their writing café where they had the chance to take part in spelling, handwriting and sentence building activities. The children played Boggle and Jenga with year 2 common exception words. They explored using different tools to write into sand and used chalk to practice their handwriting on the playground. The children also challenged themselves to add suffixes to root words! They were all super stars at practicing their writing skills, well done year 2!

Spring 1

This half term we have been finding out about people that help us, we have been learning about the jobs these people do, the uniforms they where and the vehicles they drive. We have had some wonderful visits from the Police, the fire service and some Paramedics. We were able to try on the uniforms, use their special equipment and sit in the Police car, fire engine and Ambulance. We used the fire fighters hose and thermal camera and we used a heart monitor and oxygen mask of the Paramedics. We have learnt so much and been very inspired by people working in brave and helpful job roles.

Our Power of reading text this half term was ‘What the ladybird heard’ We have learnt lots of lady bird facts and enjoyed finding out about farms and farm animals. We had a visit from a wonderful petting farm one morning. We met a Pony, 2 Sheep, a dog, some rabbits and guinea pigs and 2 ferrets.

Our RE learning this half term has been the story of Noah. We have made our own floating arks and practiced balancing animals 2 by 2 on them until they sank. We found out that at the end of the Bible story God sent a rainbow to Noah as a promise. We have been busy making rainbows and learning about all of the colours in one.

What a busy and Fun half term we have had!

Picasso inspired self-portraits

During the spring term, the children have learnt all about the artwork of Picasso. They explored the idea of cubism by using photos of their own faces from different angles and distorting these.

Power of Reading

Year 2 have really loved hearing a new story called ‘The dark’ during Spring 1. In the story, the main character is frightened of the dark. The children have responded to the story by drawing their own representations of the dark and using synonyms to describe dark. They have also created their very own glow jars to help anyone who is scared of the dark. Look how amazing the glow jars are!

Science learning

During Spring 1, the Year 2 children are learning all about our bodies and the importance of keeping our bodies healthy. The children loved their science lesson learning all about the heart and the vital role it plays. The children put on their lab coats and investigated a real pig’s heart. They drew it first and then had the opportunity to hold it.

Reading comprehension workshop

Thank you to all the adults who were able to join year 2 for their reading comprehension workshop, the children had a great time. Please find below the information shared on the day.

Autumn 2

In Autumn 2 we learnt all about Autumn and colours. Our power of reading book was ‘The Gigantic Turnip’.

We explored pumpkins and used tweezers to find seeds inside them, we looked closely with magnifying glasses. We made leaf prints, painting crunchy leaves orange, red and yellow and printed them on paper. We explored the leaves in the garden and found out why so many of them had changed colour and fallen from the trees… Its Autumn and they will grow back again in Spring .

We learnt the names of lots of colours, we matched them, painted with them, went on colour hunts and sorted them. We also became scientists and colour mixed. We had different colour water in jugs and using a pipette mixed two of them at a time together. When we stirred the new pot of water we had made a different colour.

Our power of reading book was all about a vegetable called a turnip. We held a reading cafe for our families where we had fun with all sorts of different vegetable related activities. We made our own Mr Potato head with real vegetables. We have a farm tuff tray where we could plant and harvest mini vegetables, we planted beans and printed using vegetables in paint. The best bit was the table full of vegetables to snack on!

Christmas was at the end of Autumn 2. We had a amazing time celebrating together. We learnt the Nativity story and why we celebrate Christmas. We had a party, a Christmas lunch, a visit from Father Christmas and we all sang and danced beautifully in Church at our first Christmas performance.
